Counter Strike 1.6

Originally released as a Half-Life mod in 1999, Counter Strike (CS) has grown to become the most popular online PC action game of all-time. Despite the availability of an updated version using Valve’s newer Source engine, CS 1.6 continues to be one of the most played games worldwide.

The tactical shooter, which played in first person view, was first released by Minh Le and Jess Cliffe as free downloads to Half-Life players. The mod turned out to be so popular that Sierra Entertainment, Half-Life’s publisher, ended up partnering with the duo to release Counter Strike 1.0 near the end of 2000. While the retail version was essentially the same as the 100 MB download (a considerable chunk of bandwidth hogger at the time), the $30 price gave you the game without the need for a high-speed connection and included additional multiplayer titles such as Team Fortress Classic, Wanted and Opposing Force.

Counter Strike For Dummies

The first-person shooter (FPS) relies on a very basic concept. Pit two teams, one consisting of terrorists and the other of counter-terrorists, with a singular mission and have them battle to its completion. There are two kinds of missions native to the original game - planting/detonating a bomb and protecting/saving a hostage. Both missions are executed against the clock. A team wins by either completing the mission objective or killing every member of the opposing squad. Other missions (which are available depending on the map you play and the server plug-ins installed) include escorting a VIP while the terrorists attempt to kill them and absolute deathmatches with no other goal but total annihilation of the opposing team.

Game Play

In CS, you begin a round by purchasing weapons - meaning your ammunition for each mission is limited. This is a welcome departure from many earlier shooters which pretty much allowed players to carry whatever they wanted. The limitation forced players to pick their shots wisely - putting a premium on strategy - instead of going in Rambo style with a seemingly endless stream of bullets in tow.

Graphics and sound quality on CS 1.6 are pure Half-Life, which means they were relevant a long time ago. That doesn’t mean it’s bad - just that it isn’t as fitting with the level of graphics and audio modern titles exhibit. The guns are actually quite realistic and the textures very good for its intended purpose. Additionally, the merely passable graphics and sometimes lacking sound do no harm to the amazing gameplay that continues to make Counter Strike a playable title, inching close to a decade after its first “Beta” release.

Early on, it can prove difficult to separate the terrorists from their benign counterparts - many have ended up mistakenly shooting their own men. It doesn’t last long though and you should pick it up pretty easily inside a few rounds.

While going in with guns blazing will earn you some kills, it’s a strategy that will likely leave you dead. CS is all about team dynamics and accurate attacks - almost as realistic as it gets. Pelting an enemy with a smattering of bullets isn’t as good an idea as it may be in similar shooters - the more you fire in a single burst, the less accurate your aim gets. Controlled bursts to vital target areas, on the other hand, will get you better results.

Going off lone-wolf and leaving team members to fend for themselves are likely to leave you beaten round after agonizing round. CS is a truly team activity - most of the time, the squad with the best group strategy wins.

Before its release, no other game has blended the elements of competitive gun combat, team-based dynamics and addicting fun so well. Fast-paced and action-packed, rounds last less than 5 minutes with many rarely going past half of it. The realistic mortality - a single bullet to the head will take you out - brought out a different kind of gameplay, mimicking practical, real-life strategy than a workaround for the game’s frailties. Similarly, dying meant you had to sit out the rest of the round - unlike most previous FPS games that allowed you to merely spawn and return to combat. That small adjustment allows the build-up of even greater anxiety to stay alive and keep yourself in the thick of the action.

Hacks abound for the game with dozens upon dozens of great workarounds to give you an edge during online play. Among CS 1.6 hacks, they include basic aimbots (vector and hitbox), advanced aimbots (auto-shooters and auto-walls), forcing friendly AI, spawning enemies, immediate access to all weapons, removal of recoil and spread, stat display and custom targeting options such as sniping from an impossible distance and various zoom hacks. For Counter Strike Source hacks, they have basically the same options.

Newbies With Thick Skin

CS is not for the feint of heart and it’s not because of its innate violence either. The game is one of the most unfriendly titles newbies can partake in. Despite numerous tutorial sessions available both online and offline, there is simply no way to learn the game’s nuances without playing fodder to the thousands (or millions) of veteran players online. Leave your ego at the door when you log in and, hopefully, you’ll figure it out in no time.

The Magic Remains

Counter Strike is one of the most influential games ever released, inspiring a new generation of games and spawning dozens of copycats in its wake. What’s truly amazing about CS 1.6, though, is its enduring quality as a game. With a wealth of mods and add-ons from legions of developers worldwide, it is easily a title that will take a long time before truly packing it in. Even then, it will likely still keep a dedicated and loyal following.
