GTA4 for PC sucks. I just bought it from direct2drive and after downloading and installing I quickly uninstalled and asked for my money back. I’m hearing that I’m not the only one who requested a refund from Direct2Drive and apparently they are being less than helpful about refunds. I’ll give them a couple days and do a charge back.
The reviews on Amazon for GTA4 are horrible:
People are giving GTA4 bad reviews because it comes infected with SecuROM. That’s not even my biggest beef with them. My beef is the bullshit they make you go through to be able to play. First you have to install some BS called “social club” and then you have to create a Windows Live ID and link that account with this social club account. If that wasn’t bad enough, everytime I tried to link the account it told me that there was some internal error and to try again or create a new Live account. I simply don’t have time for this shit, I spend 4 or 5 hours downloading, and :45+ min installing and trying to get the game to work.
The best part came while I was uninstalling this pile of crap and got a popup from SecuROM. I suppose if you had read the 10 pages of legal junk the SecuROM notice would have been in there. Just the entire thing is ridiculous. I hope Direct2Drive refuses to refund my money so I can do a charge back on them.
Apparently the graphics are sort of crap too and there isn’t even any anti-aliasing, what kind of BS is that?
I definitely DO NOT recommend this game.

This GTA 4 release really gives PC gaming a bad name. Imagine all the people not able to install GTA 4 because all of the extra crap. This game release makes me a sad panda :(.

Rockstar are a bunch of liars! Have a look at the screen shots on the cover of the PC-DVD ROM case you purchased, they are smooth and flawless, just as I expected the game to be. The game is a waste of time and money without AA and better shading. OMG this is the worst port I have ever seen. Rockstar, you bunch of wankers!

The new GTA IV game is a shock for all lovers of the GTA series! After installation, two to five hours (!!!) you get a “few” f*****g errors and then when the game finally runs (maybe …), you will be surprised with such an incredibly bad and bugged graphics that a nothing more mind!
The game is a shame for Rockstar!

Took way to long to install, and on the LOWEST of the LOWEST of the LOWEST F*****g it still runs like absolute #@$#@$#@$#@!!!!!! I have an nVidia 8600- and that is what THEY recommend, and IT SUCKS OUT LOUD!!!!
The source engine can run awesome games with stunning graphics and take even less specs…
F**k you RockStar, go suck social club or whatever the hell it is.

Thanks alot you fucking morons. I bought and pre-ordered gta 4 for pc about a month and a half before it came out. The people at rockstar are odviously not in touch with the PC gaming community. Windows LIVE, rockstar social lounge? PLEASE. Whoever was behind that idea should be fired on the spot, if not mobbed and hung. PLEASE, what a fucking joke. On top of it being a f-ing joke, it took you a whole year? GO FUCK YOURSELVES. Here is a hint, pc gamers want a game that you install and play. If you want some sort of multiplayer element, BUILD IT INTO YOUR OWN SOFTWARE. San andreas is played regularly with over 100 people per server, your telling me you cant do better?? AND THATS A PRIVATE MOD. WE DONT WANT ALL OF THIS ADD ON GARBAGE, I REPEAT, WE DO NOT WANT ALL OF THIS ADD ON GARBAGE. ESPECIALLY ANYTHING ASSOCIATED WITH “WINDOWS LIVE”. Didnt you learn anything during the elections? This generation dosn’t want any more of the same garbage. You should have hired the same team that made san andreas for this, not some bullshit team that designs console games. Just bought this game. My system meets the specs, SLI, etc. I must say that RockStar Games has really PISSED ME OFF. First of all, I had to install a battery of “required this and required that” before the thing would install, then I’m informed that I CAN’T SAVE my progress unless I have an online account? What the f*ck is that sh*t??? I CAN’T BELIEVE this crap. Secondly, on the LOWEST settings, the performance playable, but above that, forget it. Do I need a $3000 computer built to run this piece of crap?
I was REALLY REALLY looking forward to playing this, and Rockstar has LET ME DOWN BIGTIME! GTA-SA is one of my all time favorite games. They better come out with a god-damn patch for this quick because I already gave them my $50.00 for a game that I can’t play!
What - did Microsoft put a GUN to your collective heads and say it our way or the highway? This is MAJOR BULLSH*T. Personally, at this point, I’d rather TRADE IT IN for a more mature game that actually plays and where I can SAVE TO MY OWN DAMN HARD DRIVE - you IDIOTS.

Windows Live is to blame for this. That is the biggest reason for most console to pc failures and it certainly won’t end here with GTA IV. WINDOWS LIVE NEEDS TO GO!!! I use to be all for honesty and buying pc games to help profit the developers to make more games, but because Rockstar decided to be such sellouts I’m considering the pirate sources from now on and i don’t give a sh#t if I help contribute to the destruction of pc gaming. Oh yeah, and one more thing, I honestly believe now the only hope for future computer gaming lies in the hands of Mac, and that’s pretty fu#king sad man considering there was a time when 3d games was first introduced you knew that the pc version was always the best. That is clearly not the case anymore.

First of all… No PC special. And why the eff is the PC version more expensive when it’s just a port and it’s infested with legal malware in SecuROM(which basically promotes piracy since the pirated versions don’t make you go through all the BS)? Then the game isn’t optimized for PC at all. It’s probably one of the crappiest ports ever made.
Besides this, they removed a ton of the cool stuff in GTA:SA. And for what? Better graphics? They forgot to mention that the game is missing certain textures and other stuff like that on the DVD box, did they? I can go on and on. Why don’t I get the classic GTA camera and I have to move it by myself since it’s more effective when I drive? I remember the times when GTA games were only getting better and better(giant leap from 2 to 3 then from 3 to SA). I remember I pirated San Andreas and then bought it because I thought Rockstar deserves the money for such a cool game. No anti-aliasing? You have to be kiddin’ me!!!

I forgot to add the other bullshit about future PC hardware when you want to up the graphics. No offense, but PS3 has inferior graphics processing power than my PC and I can’t play it properly on medium. That’s what happens when they sell crap software that takes a toll on the hardware. I remember Mafia looked better than GTA3 and it ran better too. I guess with the money I’ll get back from this stupid game, I’ll buy Mafia2.

What is up with you guys? PC gamers are supposed to be used to “getting things working right” aren’t they? You’ve all been softened up in you cosseting console worlds! Made me laugh the guy trying to run this on a lowly 8600! That card was one up from entry level 2 generations ago. I am surpised that my 8800GT with latest Forceware runs this game better than PS3 or 360; still going to upgrade though. That is what we have always had to do when new software or games come out!

PS install was a so easy too. You should have tried installing DOS games and having to sort out memory allocations and hardware interupts for legacy devices - that was interesting & fun!

First of all, Renesis, PC gamers like me dont want to have to go through bullshit to play a fucking game this is poorly optimised to begin with. “Windows Live” and “Social Club” just to play the single-player because you otherwise cant save the game. I get tired of you morons telling people they need to upgrade and all that bullshit, thats always the solution isnt it? “Upgrade your RAM”, “Get a new Video Card” are my favorites - Thing is we are talking about modern computers running this game badly and they even admit in they’re manual that “high settings are reserved for future hardware”, what you are doing is saying to game developers that “its okay to develope a game that ends up a clusterfuck for the players”
So you know what? “I’m considering the pirate sources” too. Its funny, I was going to buy this game with my money, but decided against pre-order and its a good thing I did and waited for the reviews because this sounds like one disaster of a game. You’d think they’d learn from Mass Effect, Bioshock and Spore.

I got gta 4 last night…..and I’ve wasted 35 pounds of my money. The rubbish social club crashes when you try and start the game, stopping you from playing. The securom is nuts, why does it need to a check that the release date has passed, when its been out for days now??? I’m trading this in, and then I’m downloading a pirate copy that works, which I will spread to my friends, so rockstar will lose out just as I have in buying this. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!!!

If your fed up of being told to upgrade then go out and buy a PS3 or Xbox360, then when you have to keep buying the latest console you will find that pc tweeks and such are not as expensive. Go back to your simple tetris games and let the big boy gamers play these kinds games. Once you have overcome the problems with pc games you find that it was worth it.

Pirating is for losers or chavs. You well realise this when people stop making games, music and videos coz you cheap A-holes have taken the money out of the industry. Renesis, amazingly though, those DOS games didn’t cost 50$. If I’d pay 5$ for this game, I wouldn’t mind dealing with the cluster fuck that it is. Plus, today there are different standards. As long as I pay for something I don’t want it to be infested with malware junk, waste my time with futile applications(RSC, WL) or other crap like this.
And this is besides the point. This game doesn’t even have anti-aliasing or any PC optimization. I don’t get why it took them more than half an year to get it ready for PC since they didn’t do any thing to improve the way it would run on a different platform.
And to sum it up… I don’t play computer games because they’re my life. I want to come home and waste some time on the PC before I go to party or get laid while you are fixing GTA4.

Crazymaz, I’m not tight with money on things that deserve it. If, and I underline if, this game would have ran smoothly on a modern computer(who puts to shame the performances of consoles), I wouldn’t have been punished because I bought the game(signing up for a lot of things encourages piracy. You think pirates need to make an account on the Society Club?). Basically, I refuse to pay 50$ on a poorly made port. Why would I pay 15$ more than the console game costs when they spent crap to make it? I’d pay 80$ on it if it would be optimized for PCs and it wouldn’t be missing textures or restrict performances. I just don’t like to be scammed.
I said that because people actually have a life and don’t spend their time to make up for Rockstars lazy made and poorly made ports. I just want to come home and put the DVD in and play, then study or go out to parties or whatever.
And I’m not from the US.

Reading forums about it… It doesn’t support SLI? lmao, Rockstar are even lazier than I thought. It sucks because I cracked GTA:SA and I bought it afterwards because they’ve done some work on it and it was def worth the money. GTA4 on the other hand… I should write an editorial about why PC gaming is down and email it to all the big companies customer support. Not that they’d care much as long as zombies buy their games.
