The recent flap in Vancouver regarding the refusal of unionized postal workers to deliver hate mail has been resolved. The hate mail will be delivered by Monday, as promised in it’s three business days commitment.

The incident began when unionized postal workers in East Vancouver walked off the job Thursday morning after refusing to deliver a publication called “The Prophetic Word”, published by Ontario-based Baptist Fundamentalists. The decision not to deliver the mail was based on a headline which read that AIDS are the “consequences of the sin of homosexuality.”

But Canada Post refuses to cease delivery of the hate literature, saying “we don’t censor the mail. We cannot.” Federal NDP MP for Vancouver East Libby Davies said she received an unusually high number of calls and emails from constituents who were offended that CP was distributing the booklet. Ms.Davies pointed out that if radio or television would not broadcast such an opinion, why the mail? There is now the question whether the proliferation of the material does qualify as “hate literature” and not covered under the terms of freedom of speech.

I won’t deny that people have the right to express their views, but are we as a people who pay taxes for the government to deliver our mail, obligated to support the transfer of literature that clearly states an erroneous and misleading statement? That homosexuals have somehow disobeyed God and deserve to die a horrible death of AIDS? As though that were somehow a punishment God came up with for gays.

I wonder how quickly CP would cease delivery if the headlines were based on peoples of more significant demographics:

“There is a Zionist conspiracy to perpetrate the holocaust myth”
“Medical evidence shows that blacks are inferior to whites”
